Baltimore Stars Financial Aid Scholarship Program

 

BYHC strives to provide an opportunity for every child who wants to play hockey. The BYHC Scholarship Fund is used to provide scholarship to participants that demonstrate a financial need under the provisions of this program.   

 

 

Scholarship Fund

a) As part of its annual budget and/or through donations specifically designated to the scholarship fund, BYHC will determine a dollar amount that will be set aside as a scholarship fund. These funds will be used to help offset player’s fees who, because of financial reasons request assistance. Funding for the scholarship program comes from donations specifically given for hockey scholarships, along with any additional budget dollars designated for scholarships at the discretion of the BYHC board. The total amount of scholarships awarded cannot exceed the amount budgeted for scholarships.

b) Scholarships are granted on a per season basis. Applicants must reapply each season.     

c) Amounts granted will be from $0 to $500 per player. The total amount granted will not exceed 50% of the total BYHC registration fees except in extreme hardship situations. Scholarships are awarded in the form of reduced BYHC registration fees. The amount and number of scholarship grants will be depend on club registration levels and overall financial health of the club.

Criteria for Scholarship

a) All players that meet the eligibility requirements to play in the BYHC are eligible to apply for scholarship.

b) The applicant must be in good standing with BYHC and exhibit a general financial need. Preference will be given to those applicants whose families qualify for public assistance programs such as school lunch subsidies, medical assistance and unemployment insurance. Additional consideration will be given to applicants experiencing long-term hardship circumstances.

c) Families receiving scholarships are will be required to perform volunteer hours in support of BYHC directives.

d) Any applicant facing disciplinary action from BYHC, CBHL or CCHL or any other youth organization will not be eligible for assistance

Application Process

a) Applicants must submit an online scholarship application by July 31st. Applicants will not be required to submit any documentation but will be required to present documents if requested by the committee.

b) Once registration is closed, the BYHC Scholarship Committee will review all applications and determine if financial aid will be awarded.

c) If an application is accepted, registration fees as applicable will be refunded.  No applications will be accepted after registration is closed.

b) The Scholarship Committee, which consists of the BYHC President, VP, and Treasurer will review all applications and determine the grants based on eligibility, the total number of applicants, the amount of available funds, and other factors considered relevant by the committee.

c) The Scholarship committee reserves the right to request additional information at the time the scholarship is being considered.

d) Applicant’s names and all information provided will be kept strictly confidential. Only the scholarship committee will review the applications.  

e) All decisions of the scholarship committee are final; there is no appeal process.
